                                     Rationale/Reflection

Standard #6 Assessment:

"The teacher understands and uses

multiple methods of assessment to

engage learners in their own growth,

to monitor learner progress, and to

guide the teachers and learner

decision making" (InTASC,2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

In the spring semester of 2022, in my Introduction to Physical & Health Education for Elementary Teachers course, I constructed a lesson plan with a pre-picked group from my instructors. The purpose of creating this lesson plan was to guide me as the teacher to engage my learners in their education by monitoring their  progress to see if they could meet Indiana academic standards for their specific grade level. I created a lesson plan that had eight different obstacles to get through then they were to answer a question posted on the wall next to their challenge. If given more time we would come back to the classroom to see which challenges were the most challenging and which problems were the most difficult, then we would go back and try again. The learners had a grading rubric where at the end of the lesson, they could assess themselves along with me as the teacher assessing them by observing their skill level.

Analysis of What I Learned:

I consulted with my group members about the challenges we might face in allowing the children to assess themselves. We knew they needed to have a set amount of time to debrief from the obstacle course before filling out a sheet with direct information about the lesson presented over equations they saw on the wall. If we could redo our lesson, we would put our book, “We’re Going On a Bear Hunt,” at the end of the lesson to give children the cool-down time they needed. Through consulting with other peers in my class I was able to learn that the fewer directions the children need to follow a game the more engaged the learners will be with the overall lesson.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

My lesson plan matches extremely well with standard #6. It allows children to be engaged in their own learning while cooperating with peers. They were able to assess their work at each station to monitor their own growth and progress. The theorist that best fits with my artifact and this standard is Vygotsky. Vygotsky believed children should be allowed to build connections based on social interactions (Kurt, 2020). In my lesson plan, I partnered the learners together to grow their learning with the assistance of their peers, allowing them to push themselves to the best of their ability.
