Standard #2: Learning Differences

“The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards” (InTASC, 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

In the spring semester of 2022, in my EDUC 230 The Exceptional Child class, I constructed a completely inclusive classroom design along with the small details such as posters I might add in my future classroom. The purpose of creating this artifact was to understand the differences of individual students, including their different cultures and backgrounds, allowing all learners to be eligible to meet high standards in the classroom. By educating myself on the topics of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, students with hearing impairments, students with visual impairments, students with physical disabilities, students with seizures, and students with behavior and attention disorders, I was able to think deeper to understand how to meet all learning differences of students. These topics allowed me to make real-world connections between classroom setup and inclusive environments and ensure I am enabling all learners to meet high standards. The classroom layout gave me a better understanding of important items I need to consider for my future classroom.

Analysis of What I Learned:

I consulted with my group on the importance of creating an inclusive classroom environment for all learners with different needs. I also grew my knowledge about creating this classroom by asking my professor for the insight she has from being a teacher. Another great tool I used was online research. Through my online research study, I found that simply the colors of your classroom play a huge role in the way students learn. I also found that having visuals such as pictures and the physical writing of all posters and directions is critical in a diverse learning environment.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

My inclusive classroom fits perfectly with Standard #2. My classroom involves individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards by making accommodations and modifications for various needs I might face inside my classroom.  Within my personal classroom, students can develop a feeling of inclusion, diversity, and comfortability. My classroom uses Bronfenbrenner Ecological Systems theory by using the child as the main focus. In my classroom, I focused on the needs of all the children based on health, behaviors, and safety, making them my ultimate goal. In Bronfenbrenner's theory, he states children are easily affected by their surrounding environment. The influence of one system on a child’s development depends on its relationship with the others, which allowed me to think about all aspects of a child's needs (Guy-Evans, 2020).
